More of Yoga teaching

Wednesday turned into rest day.
Thursday morning class was no show, expected, so I did personal practice emphasizing inversions and the breath.
Thursday evening, the Regulars came as usual and it was an enjoyable practice of Primary Series, using more relaxation.  Much needed from too much Christmas meals and a long break from the last practice.

Yoga calls me early today

I awakened early going outside for the morning paper and the grass was frosted white everywhere and it was cold with sun shining.  I drank a smoothie and drove to the yoga studio for a class,  Slow Flow Vinyasa.  I enjoyed not teaching today being off for the Holidays although I taught yesterday at a studio.

The door was opened by someone, not teaching, but had a key.  We waited inside and the teacher showed up and we spent a lot of time standing at front of mat doing breathing exercises then went into the Slow Flow routine.

Afterward I took my time and finally went outside and drove home and preparing a lunch sandwich using left over cornbread, veggies, and turkey pieces.  Now I am looking forward to the Ashtanga class tomorrow morning and evening wondering how many will show up during the Holidays.

We did twists rather than inversions at the class, but I longed for an inversion.  Isn't this picture nice?

PM practice on holiday was at a yoga studio Ashtanga Yoga Short forms with some full vinyasas, making it to Bhujapidasana (class did Bakasana), shoulder stand as the finishing pose and corpse pose.  Interesting class and delivery by the instructor.

Bring It!

Later this morning I went to Pro health and Fitness and did the circuit training 2nd day keeping same number of sets and reps and finishing with 50 crunches.  for so few stations it was a workout.  The squats with weights added should help me, for I have not included weighted squats and Tony Horton would be proud of developing a workout plan that includes working on improving our weaknesses.  Tomorrow I will do the next day of the chin up challenge.  This all should be fun.  And I plan on Plyocide, also, from this month's latest DVD of One On One.

MPCC Ashtanga Yoga AM Class

For this class I added some of the 2nd Series into the Primary Series adding variety to the practice.  students were not accustomed to the backbends of 2nd series and wanted to work more on bow pose and flipping onto the side holding the bow.

Ashtanga Yoga Personal Practice

This AM yoga practice include SS-A, SS-B, Standing Poses, Primary Series, Final Finishing poses and corpse pose.

Muscles felt great loosening up during the practice, had more strength even lifting buttocks and feet off floor as transition from one pose to another when not doing jump backs.

Pro Health and Fitness

I went to Pro health and fitness gym, and D. walked me through an exercise routine that even though three stations, each one exercised several muscle groups. I did 3 sets, 12 reps each set until the last one and did 4 sets.

lst exercise: used 30 pound bar with weights that he called jerk and press. Feet apart folded forward, lift the bar up with arms down pause then lift bar up to chest, pause, then push bar up overhead, pause, lover bar using tricips and biceps, pause, fold forward looking straight ahead, touch weights to floor and then repeat for total of 12 times. This was challenging doing for 3 sets. Resting appreciated between sets for 45 seconds.

2nd Exercise: Squats using 30 pounds on bar (with machine for safety), squat sitting back, stand up pushing bar up to top then coming up on toes, go into squat slowly and repeat for total of 12 reps, 3 sets, resting 45 seconds between sets.

3rd Exercise: Bench press using bar with 30 pounds (using machine for safety), slowly pushing up and slowly lowering down 12 reps, resting for 45 seconds between sets. This was too easy for me, so he had me do another set.

That was it. I sweated and the heart rate went up, and the quads and thighs felt exhausted. The first two exercise were most challenging. The 3rd was not, so D made me do another set.

He let me go and said come back Thursday same time. he suggested that I do some ab work and then go home.

This is a short workout but challenging. The goal is not to delay, but move thru it without wasting time.

He seemed surprised I was not feeling faint or too much out of breath. Good job. We will see how you feel Thursday. My form was very good and he said my goal should be doing 3-4 sets of each exercise until ready for increasing weight on 2nd and 3rd sets.

I looked at this as circuit training with only 3 stations.

AM Yoga Class at MPCC

Surprised so many showed up for practice, one lady even brought her granddaughter.  She was well behaved and a welcome addition to the class.  She liked SS and fundamental standing poses, but did not participate in the Primary Series Poses.

Gee I am wondering if evening class attends from 6-7 PM.  They told me last thursday that they had church function for Christmas.

Three ladies did show up for yoga class.  We did a more relaxed class without jump backs and thrus, but did many of the Primary Series poses.  The class laughed at some of the poses, not being able to do them.

No class Wednesday morning due to Christmas holiday schedule, and Tuesday morning we have class at MPCC, but no evening class.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Week 6, Day 2

Chin Up Challenge, day 2 week 6 completed.

Shanti Yoga and Counseling class

Ashtanga led class .  We used blocks for jump backs and jump thrus building arm balance strength.  In Marichyasana B, we used strap and  managed to grab fingers while binding.

The studio was cold and never did warm up even with heating system on and a portable heater running the whole time.  We did over 75% of Primary and finishing poses.  The class was fun as usual.

Saturday at Pro Health and Fitness

Designed my own workout starting with the Day 1 week 6 of Chin up Challenge.

I did upper body workout waiting two minutes between sets or different exercise.  I also added some leg exercises, shoulders, shoulder presses, bicep curls , some yoga exercises for jump back and jump thrus using dumb bells for elevation, switch chin ups, push ups, crunches, and squats with no weights.

I also asked David to give me a workout for improving general conditioning, which he said to check with him Monday.  I hope we can manage a time for this.  I will have a workout routine and chart to fill out for each day in the Pro Health Gym.  The following is of me working on Marichyasana A, in the gym today I worked more on this using a strap almost reaching and grasping wrist.  I think I will use this more for wrap and grab.

Attended Yoga class

For unexplained reason, I went to friend's class in yoga.  It was a slowed down version of yoga with relaxation and combined with very basic poses, not many just staying in the pose for a long time, with instructor talking the whole time and music in the background.  Certainly was a change for me, and at the time I enjoyed, but do not intend to make this a regular practice.  Occasional is enough for me.  And the next day I was sore.  yes staying in poses for several minutes does cause soreness.  I felt relaxed during the practice, but not really relaxed.  I had not warmed up or even done a single sun salutation.  but I had done fish pose for at 5 minutes and the cat dog, and lots of child poses, apasana, and standing sun salutes, sitting sun salutes, and forward fold standing and a sitting forward fold and dandasana pose,

chin up challenge

Wednesday I went to Aerobics Step class and managed to keep up, but not as familiar with routine as the regulars in the class.
Later during the day, I took the test for advancing in the chin up challenge and did 10 to move ahead to the next week that required nine for moving forward.  If less than 9, then one would repeat the previous week.

Tuesday at Moss Point Community Center Yoga Classes

The day class fielded only two, but dedicated Ashtanga yoginnis and myself.  We did full vinyasa version of Primary Series, what we could do with 60 minutes.

Evening class has 3 regulars that show up every class. During this class instead of jump backs, we did the 5 breaths lying in corpse pose between each asana.  This was very relaxing yet had more energy for the asanas.

Shanti Yoga and Counseling

Morning Ashtanga Yoga for Life class brought in new student at Shanti.  The floor was cold and took a while warming up, then near end of SS-B's one of students wanted to open the door and let in fresh air.  Our bodies were warm and the fresh cool air felt good mixed with the heated air.

Change of pace today with total body plus, which had chin ups as part of total body workout.  It moved a little too fast, as if Tony was in a hurry.

Slim In 6

This morning I started Slim In 6 DVD exercise program from Beach Body.

My weight is now 175, at 5'11".

I am on fat burning diet also hoping to lose 3% body fat.  This diet combined with regular daily exercise should be met within 6 weeks.

Thursday classes

Morning led class at Moss Point Riverfront had new student, who was only one present; so it was a private class.  The evening class had regulars come join me in the practice.  They are always present and know the routine well, not needing much direction.  I usually just count and say exhale or inhale.

Tuesday Yoga led classes

Tuesday yoga led classes at Moss Point Community Center went well.  Morning class felt great, but we took it easy after Thanksgiving weekend.  The night class was more sweat with candles burning lighting the room and night lights reflecting over the RiverFront water.

Chin Up Challenge

Monday I did P90X One on One MC2 Base and Back, which included lots of chin ups.  My chest and abdominals were sore, so I waited until today for Day 2 of week 4 chin ups.  Base and back and a day or recovery really helped me do the chin up challenge with good form.

Yoga for all levels at studio

Interesting class having so many experienced teachers in the class with me and a new teacher leading the class.  The teacher had lost over 30 pounds during the last year and looked thin faced.  The stomach area skin had not recovered from loss of body fat.  It was a fun class with slightly different warm ups than i am accustomed, some gentle yoga poses held for several minutes, but good.  Added dance moves from the 60's then a Power Yoga vinyasa flow.  flow vinyasa was all fundamental standing poses.  No binding, arm balances, inversions or pretzel poses.

Family Tree since 1589

Descendants of Thomas Hardage came to America in 1600's. 6th generation married Cherokee having Indian mother for 7th generation of Thomas Hardage.  Family Patriots were put in jail by King of England pre Revolutionary War.

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 HARDAGE was born, 1589, in Derbyshire England. He married ALICE, 1616. She was born, 1590.

This Thomas Hardage was born Thomas Hardich ,1589, and his sons, William and Joseph, were using the name Hardich when they came to America, 1636 to 1650, and the name Hardridge came about when William Hardich changed his name to Hardridge, ref. History book of Mt. Vernon, VA, reflects this change, then the change to Hardage, 1676-93.
Children of THOMAS HARDAGE and ALICE are:

2. i. THOMAS2 HARDAGE, b. 1617, England; d. 1680, VA

George and Moses Hardage were among these to serve. Joseph Hardige, James Hardridge, and James Hardage, Jr. shows up, 1694-96, court cases Westmoreland VA. Joseph Hardage, 1676, was jailed along with Richard Barton for them being leaders against the King. In all of my research the, 1676, reference to Joseph Hardage, along with the, 1685-94, reference to James Hardage, Jr., and some records of Thomas Hardage's

The colonial register refers to William Hardage along with other versions of the Spelling, Hardridge, Hardich, and Hardage. These are the oldest records of the name Hardage that I find so I believe this is the organ of the name Hardage. Prior to this time, this family was using the name Hardich, changed to Hardridge, 1650-68, then to Hardage, 1676-93.

Children of THOMAS HARDAGE and JOAN are:

William Hardage inherited his father James Hardage’s property, 1793, will witnessed by James Daniel, Fairfield Co SC. Deeds reference William and Adam moved to Edgefield Co SC by 1806. Clip from the Jackson MS newspaper September 26, 1932. Henry Adam Hardage died at the home of his son, M.S. Hardage, Leake Co. MS Henry Adam had lived with his son from 1927, after the death of his wife Susan, until his death September 25, 1932. The article also lists all his children. Noted that his son Samuel C. Hardage was a post master inspector at the Jackson Post Office.

Burial: Shockalo Cemetery, Leake Co MS

Susan Emily Sanders was the daughter of Micajah Mike Sanders and Millie Caroline Bonner. Millie Caroline Bonner was the sister of Martha Bonner, married Fredrick Fabin Freeny. Martha Bonner of the Freeny family shows she was Cherokee. The Freeny's were involved in the relocation of the Indians to OK, The Trail Of Tears. Elihue Corley Hardage married Mary Ann Sanders, daughter of Micajah Hardage and Millie Caroline Bonner. So the best I can tell is this is where the Native American blood came into our Hardage Family, there were some other references of the Hardage Family in GA and AL that were married to Native American Creek Indians, unable to pin this down yet.

P90X One on One Yoga MC2

Finally completed all of the yoga MC2 from one on one with Tony Horton DVD.  This again from P90x is better version of Power Vinyasa Yoga mentioning the breath.  Much better and a few more asanas from yoga X.  A slow version of Power Vinyasa Yoga with not much vinyasa.  There were a series of standard Power Yoga poses, but it did not weave body movement with the breath, and no mention of engaging the pelvic floor muscles or focus.  But it was much better, similar to Power Yoga class at studio, but moved much slower than a studio Power Yoga Vinyasa class.  I liked it, but had to look at DVD playing for Tony did not always mention going into the next pose, just doing it.  The class lacked flow, not being a meditative flow.  More of a yoga class by a fitness trainer, more interested in muscling into poses, rather than calming the mind.  Tony was struggling with the breath, as if lifting weights.

Led Class at Shanti Yoga and Counseling

This morning another interesting class at Shanti Yoga.  Many students are coming to yoga for therapeutic recovery from other activities.  Today a lady came with sore shoulder from playing tennis.  Yesterday it was a broken arm student with cast having fallen doing yard work.  So many look to yoga practice for healthy recoveries.

Yoga Class this AM and RYT Yoga Alliance

Moss Point Community Center Ashtanga Yoga for Life Class this morning was most interesting.  One student came last week with a cast on her arm, so we did Gentle Yoga Class, which was a change from the Ashtanga Short Forms.
She mentioned that we should do the regular class of Ashtanga and she would do what she could modifying as necessary going into child's pose and still focusing on the breath, bandhas, and drishti.  So we did it. After class she told us that she fell at home working in the yard standing on something and falling, maybe breaking her arm.  She goes to the doctor for another check up today and the doctor will decide if she needs surgery.

Today is special day in my yoga life.  Yoga Alliance received correspondence of my certificates, progressive teacher trainings, teaching experience, and workshops attended   Now I am recognized by Yoga Alliance as RYT 500 level.  Thanks to all my teachers.

Yoga Teaching at Santi Yoga and Counseling

Monday morning at Santi Yoga and Counseling had a good class, really improving with Ashtanga Yoga for Life Asanas.  New student today and noticed regulars are working well not struggling as much in the beginning having more controlled breath.

This morning it was dark with heavy clouds and rain.  I lit two large candles and kept overhead lights off, incense burning and we weaved breath with each body movement.

2nd Week Day 2 completed

20 chin up challenge, did day 2 second week.
Also completed Fruit Flush 3 day Detox from Jay Robb.
BMI this morning 24.3

Rest Day

Today is Rest Day for my yoga practice and other exercise programs.

Today is also day 3 of the Fruit Flush 3 day Detox.  I am using the Jay Robb version.

From google search:

What It Is
The fruit flush 3 day detox is, simply put, a detox diet that cleanses yours body via healthy vitamins and minerals in fruit. There are 3 days, each with their own rules about when and what to eat.
Looking at the name, it’s pretty clear that you’re going to be eating mostly fruit on this diet, but you do get to eat every two hours.
Day 1
This is typically called the pre flush day. This is actually not a fruit eating day at all, but rather a protein day. The reason behind that is if your body takes in a lot of protein today, it will be enough to last the other two days of the fruit flush diet.
That’s important because it prevents the body from using muscle for protein and allows it to burn more fat. This pre flush day also allows your body to get used to a decrease in calories as well as allowing for slight detox, which will hopefully reduce the detoxification symptoms you may get.
At any rate, here’s what you do. From 8 am to 4 pm, you drink one protein shake every 2 hours. You drink one glass of water every hour after you drink a protein shake. It would basically look like this. 8 am, protein shake; 9 am, water; 10 am, protein shake; 11 am, water, etc until you get to 4 pm.
At six o clock, you get to eat some actual solid food. 3 to 6 ounces of very lean meat or scrambled egg whites, along with 3 to 6 cups of mixed salad with one half teaspoon of olive oil and the juice of half a lemon. An hour later, drink a glass of water. And that’s it. You’re done.
Days 2 and 3
These are the days you see why this diet is referred to as a fruit flush diet. Day two is the day actual detoxification begins. Instead of protein today, you’ll have 1 serving of fruit every two hours from 8 am to 4 pm and one glass of water each hour after having a piece of fruit.
You’ll have to be careful when choosing the fruit that you know the correct serving size. For example, the serving size of a pineapple varies. It’s either a cup in chunks, or one slice that is 3/4 of an inch thick.
With most fruits, 100 ounces is considered a serving, so if you have a food scale, you’ll have an easy time of it. At six pm on this day, you’ll get that same mixed salad, 3 to 6 cups, with the olive oil and lemon juice, but instead of meat, you’ll be drinking a protein shake. 12 ounces of water with 4 to 5 scoops of a high quality whey protein powder. And, of course, the customary glass of water an hour after dinner.
Day three is simply a repeat of day two.
Things You Should Know
When choosing your fruit, it’s best to get organic, but it’s necessary that you always get fresh raw fruit. The protein powder used for your protein shake should be free of any added sugar, carbs, or fat. A Whey isolate is probably best.
Finally, there are some side effects that you may get on the 3 day fruit flush diet. These are detoxification symptoms and include headaches, fatigue, and possibly nausea. Headache was the most common symptom found amongst people who did the detox.
Caffeine is not allowed during the detox, so you may want to wean yourself off a week prior to doing the detox, to avoid caffeine withdrawal symptoms.
The great thing about the fruit flush is that because of the way it’s structured, side effects are very mild, if they even show up, and because you consume nutrients every two hours, you won’t be really hungry the entire time.

2nd Week Day 1

Went to Yoga class this morning where a substitute teacher led us in Power Vinyasa flow.  She was a little nervous and lacked experience, but good for someone not having taught for the last 8 months.

Primary Series Full Vinyasa Day w/David Swenson

Played David Swenson's Primary Series this morning making it all the way through.  Lots of sweat and added the extra push up in SS's.  It was challenging doing the Marichyasanas, still not binding fully but making the effort.  Actually did handstand from Boat, getting both feet up, but not staying long, which felt good almost going too far but correcting by extending legs up.  Chakrasana did not feel good, worrying about the neck; so did vinyasa instead.  I must focus on using the palms and arms to push up keeping neck off floor.

Today I also began a body toxin flush using Jay Robb's Whey protein every two hours for five times, drinking water after an hour after the whey protein.  Looking forward to the last meal tonight, which is 3-6 cups of vegetables with tbs of olive or flax seed oil on them.  then tomorrow it is fruit five times every two hours with last meal of 3-6 cups of vegetables with oil.  Again fruit again next day, same final meal, but adding whey protein afterwords.

Yoga Experience

Yoga Experience

In 1997 I enrolled in continuing education yoga class at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and began the practice.  When the 2nd semester started I enrolled again with Harriett Joachim.  After that semester there was a drop in students and the class was not offered again.  I continued practicing at home and later enrolled with Cheryl Catranbone at Golden Om.  I decided to take yoga classes during the day after leaving my regular job.  A few years passed and I decided to drop Golden Om when they relocated to an old house with wooden floors.  Later she sold out to Eileen and it became Driftwood and moved to new location.  I went to several types of classes and started the Ashtanga Primary Series class with Laura in the beginning and later Jen Owens.  Just before the Hurricane Katrina I lost interest in the studio practice, but continued home practice and began attending workshops by David Swenson, David Williams and Danny Paradise.  Eileen sold out to Moira Anderson and the name changed to River Rock.  I decided that I needed a teacher training course and enrolled with Debi Lewis of Jackson, MS.  I attended classes religiously in Madison and had a good time each weekend.  The last weekend I was severely ill with the flu and could not attend the final weekend, plus I had not done the 10 hours practicum teaching.  I did make up the missed weekend and took the final exam passing it with a good grade.  However I did not get a certificate lacking the hours teaching on my own.  She said I could teach at River Rock checking with Moira Anderson or teach private lessons and make video and send it to her for review.  I thought about this and even bought a DVD camera, but had problems making the video.  I could teach and lead a class, but operating the video was difficult.

I decided that I should go to Sivananda Yoga Ranch and take the teacher training course there where they worked in the teaching practicum with the one month course.  I really enjoyed this, meeting many people from all over the world and graduated with compliments by the Director and also the Swami saying that I did really well putting in the hard work required. Cita, the director said I looked like I was a professional when leading the class when I volunteered to lead the entire group during the first hatha yoga class teaching during the afternoon class.  This really boosted my confidence and I stayed there the entire month absorbing as much as I could, especially working with headstand getting additional instruction from the volunteer assistants during free time.

I came home and a month later asked Debi If she would present certificate from Joyflow for I had completed the practicum at Sivananda Yoga Ranch and they presented me a certificate saying I met all the requirements for being a Hatha Yoga teacher.  She agreed and came to River Rock one weekend doing a workshop and presented the Joyflow certificate during her workshop in an official ceremony.

I have been teaching ever since at home, for private clients in their homes, at Moss Point Community Center as a volunteer yoga teacher and at Shanti Yoga and Counseling studio.

Day 3 Chin Up Challenge

Did Day 3 Chin Up Challenge!

Yoga classes

Last night's class AY for life after weekend of clock falling back one hour, the view of River Front was enchanting seeing lights reflect off the water.  I lit the two candles and turned lights off for the practice.  Very peaceful flow listening to Krisna Das and seeing the candles flicker.

This morning's class at Santi Yoga and counseling had only one student and she was still sore from an automobile accident in NOLA.  So we did a Sivananda style class with more relaxation and a slow pace.  We did all 12 poses and a few variations.  She did headstand using the padded headstand chair after Dolphin.  It was a change of pace class from Ashtanga.

MPCC RiverFront Yoga Class

Great class this morning with class working on handstand following boat poses.  Ashtanga Yoga for Life.

Home practice placed Sherath Jois DVD into the player and noticed I need more jump backs.  He has one after each seated asana left side jump back right side jump back.  And I need adding Chakrasana as well as rolling back and forward on the spine in a circle.

For inversions the count that I use needs at least 10 rather than 5.

Namaste, looking forward to the night class.

Chin Up

Did Day 2 of chin up challenge, lst week.

Morning class at Shanti Yoga and Counseling

I arrived early to do personal practice, especially work more on binding asanas.

Before class the students mentioned losing weight, while I have only lost one pound.  One student has lost 12 pounds since starting Ashtanga yoga.  the class is losing more weight than teacher and all in today's class are more flexible than I am, which is good for only 3 months of new students attending AY for Life class.

Today's class managed to do all asanas of Primary Series up to  supta padangusthasana, then 3 bridges/wheel and 3 finishing poses and Sivasana.

Saturday, November 6, 2010

Early morning went to Power Vinyasa class at RRY.

I did Ashtanga version of SS's and strayed from class a little out of step going on my own breath and vinyasa.  I wish for Mysore class there.  A couple of the students are Ashtanga yogis, but most do other styles mostly Iyengar when doing asanas.  and the teacher does not use vinyasa weaved with the breath.  It has a flow, but not with each breath.

I wish we could have Mysore type class there.

Thursday evening class emphasized breathing.

Friday morning aerobics class used weights combining with calisthenics.

Started day one chin up challenge after class.
